Pokemon TCG Pocket Won’t Give a Straight Answer on Pack Pick Debate

The developers of the Pokémon Trading Card Game will not confirm or deny whether the boosters players choose on the pack wheel matter. Fans have been posting conspiracy theories about the packs that appear in the Pokémon Trading Card Game since the game was released, but the truth remains a mystery.

Pokemon TCG Pocket arrived on Android and iOS devices in late October and became a mega-hit, earning over $200 million as of December 3. In the free-to-play game, players complete their Pokedex by opening daily trading card packs while also battling the computer and other fans. To earn cards, players are taken to a spinning wheel where they can browse through seemingly identical packs and then select the one they want to open. Minor changes in these packs have led some to believe there are secrets, and many will scrutinize each booster pack to determine which one might contain the most valuable cards.

In a recent interview with IGN, a spokesperson for Creatures Inc addressed this question, but they didn’t give a specific answer. “Which booster pack to choose is up to you, and I think everyone develops their own way of enjoying the game,” they said. “We paid special attention to the process of choosing a booster pack, opening it, and viewing the cards so that it feels fun.” One of the most popular theories is that opening the Pokemon TCG Pocket packs with curved corners will result in better cards, although this idea seems to have become less popular over time. Based on these comments, many now believe that there is no clear trick to choosing a booster pack, and the results are predetermined when players open the rotating screen.

Players Now Believe the Pack Carousel in Pokemon TCG Pocket Offers an Illusion of Choice

In Pokemon TCG Pocket, players can also use the Wonder Pick system to randomly select a card from another fan’s recently opened pack. YouTuber PokeNinaa recently posted a short video of herself opening a pack of cards while her friend quickly checked their Wonder Pick page, further demonstrating that the roulette wheel gives players the illusion of choice. The moment PokeNinaa opened the booster pack wheel, her Wonder Pick appeared on her friend’s account, accurately displaying the selection before she could even see the card in person.

On December 17, the second expansion pack for Pokemon TCG Pocket, Mythology Island, was released. The new booster pack introduces around 80 new cards for players to find, including fan-favorites Mew and Celebi. The developers announced that limited trading will be added to the game in January 2025, and the feature will expand over time. Additionally, the Blastoise EX Drop Event will run from January 1 to January 15, 2025, allowing players to grab a set of new cards in Promo Pack A Series Vol 3.
